Blue Lagoon vs Blue Cave: Which Boat Tour Should You Choose?

July 20, 2026 kastelboat Comments: 0 Uncategorized

Before we compare...

Before we dive into the comparison, it’s worth mentioning that there are several places around the world called Blue Lagoon and Blue Cave.

In this guide, we’re comparing the Blue Lagoon near Drvenik Veliki (Krknjaši) and the Blue Cave on Biševo Island – two of the most popular boat tour destinations in central Dalmatia.

If you’re travelling from Kaštela, Split or Trogir, these are the locations you’ll most likely come across when searching for boat tours in Croatia.

So… If you’re planning a boat trip in Croatia, you’ve probably come across two of the country’s most famous destinations: the Blue Lagoon and the Blue Cave.

Both are stunning, both are popular and both promise an unforgettable day at sea. But despite their similar names, they offer completely different experiences.

So how do you choose?

In this guide, we’ll compare the Blue Lagoon and the Blue Cave based on swimming, scenery, travel time, crowds and who each tour is best suited for. By the end, you’ll know exactly which one matches your ideal day on the Adriatic.

Blue Lagoon vs Blue Cave: quick comparison

Blue Lagoon 🌊🪨 Blue Cave
✔ Crystal-clear water             ✔ Famous natural cave
✔ More swimming time.      ✔ Unique sightseeing
✔ Ideal for families.      ✔ More adventure
✔ Shorter boat ride✔ More islands
✔ Relaxing atmosphere             ✔ Bucket-list experience

What is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a beautiful bay located between the islands of Drvenik Veliki and Krknjaši. It’s famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water, calm sea and excellent snorkeling conditions.

Unlike many sightseeing-focused tours, the Blue Lagoon is all about relaxing. You’ll spend more time swimming, floating in the sea, exploring underwater life and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Because it’s located relatively close to Kaštela, Split and Trogir, less time is spent cruising and more time is spent actually enjoying the destination.

What is the Blue Cave?

The Blue Cave is a natural sea cave located on Biševo Island, near Vis.

It became famous because sunlight enters through an underwater opening and reflects inside the cave, creating a spectacular glowing blue effect.

Unlike the Blue Lagoon, the Blue Cave is primarily a sightseeing destination. Visitors enter the cave on small official boats and stay inside for only a few minutes before continuing the tour to other nearby islands and beaches.

For many visitors, seeing the Blue Cave is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Swimming Experience

If your dream day involves swimming in crystal-clear water, snorkeling and relaxing in secluded bays, the Blue Lagoon is the clear winner.

The Blue Cave itself is not a place where you can swim inside the cave. Swimming usually takes place at other stops during the tour.

If spending as much time in the water as possible is your priority, choose the Blue Lagoon.

Travel Time

One of the biggest differences between these tours is how much time you’ll spend on the boat.

The Blue Lagoon is much closer to the mainland, making it an excellent choice for travellers who prefer shorter boat rides and longer swimming stops.

The Blue Cave is located much farther away, which means you’ll spend considerably more time cruising between islands.

If you enjoy the journey just as much as the destination, this isn’t necessarily a disadvantage. But if you’d rather maximise your time in the water, it’s something worth considering.

Which Tour is Better for Families?

Families with young children generally enjoy the Blue Lagoon more.

Why?

  • shorter travel time
  • calmer sea
  • more swimming
  • easier pace throughout the day

Children usually appreciate being able to jump into the sea more often instead of spending several hours on the boat.

Which Tour is Better for Couples?

Honestly?

Both. 🙂

The Blue Lagoon is perfect for couples looking for a peaceful, romantic day swimming together.

The Blue Cave is ideal for couples who enjoy sightseeing, exploring islands and visiting one of Croatia’s most famous natural attractions.

It simply depends on the type of holiday you’re looking for.

Crowds

Both destinations are popular during the summer.

However, the Blue Cave often involves waiting times because only a limited number of boats can enter the cave at once.

At the Blue Lagoon, even when there are several boats nearby, the bay usually offers plenty of space for swimming and relaxing.

Which Tour Offers Better Value?

There isn’t a universal winner.

Choose the Blue Lagoon if you:

  • love swimming
  • enjoy snorkeling
  • want a relaxed day
  • travel with children
  • prefer shorter boat rides

Choose the Blue Cave if you:

  • want to visit one of Croatia’s most famous attractions
  • enjoy sightseeing
  • don’t mind longer boat rides
  • want to explore several islands in one day

Our Recommendation

If this is your first boat trip in Croatia and you’re dreaming of turquoise water, relaxing swims and a laid-back atmosphere, the Blue Lagoon is often the better choice.

If you’ve always wanted to experience the famous glowing Blue Cave and don’t mind spending more time cruising between islands, the Blue Cave offers a truly unique adventure.

Whichever you choose, a private boat tour allows you to enjoy the day at your own pace, away from crowded group excursions.
